Empowering Education
The foundation of a strong economy is an educated and adaptive workforce. To get that workforce, we must collaborate with businesses, local communities, teachers and parents to implement real school improvement programs. On that foundation we will:
- Build on the basics. To establish the foundations for a modern education, our children must have core skills. They must be able to read, write, and do arithmetic. Congress must pass bills demonstrating that we are doing everything possible to teach our kids the basics from kindergarten to 8th grade – the skills that will serve as a foundation for all other learning.
- Invest in local education. Local school board members, superintendents and teachers are better prepared to monitor and improve academic standards. We must give local schools the freedom and responsibility to make education work better. Washington should set standards of accountability and provide the resources and flexibility to school districts to get the job done.
- Give families more education choices. We must give American families more educational choices, including more magnet and charter schools. Parents should be able to choose to send their children to higher performing public or private schools if their child’s school fails to meet minimum standards of quality.
- Reward excellence. Good teachers are the cornerstone of any education reform effort and those that are willing to work hard to see students succeed ought to receive recognition for their endeavors. We should therefore work to help states reward our nation’s outstanding teachers.
