A Stronger National Defense

In order to achieve freedom, opportunity, and prosperity, we must have a strong national defense. Remaining strong is accomplished by making investments in tomorrow’s defense capabilities. We cannot imperil our future by focusing only on today’s battles. To remain the world leader in defense technology, aerospace, outer space, and cyber space, it will require investment, and more importantly, foresight and imagination.

A strong national defense also means a healthy industrial base. Congressional support for those who provide our military with state-of-the-art equipment must continue to be a priority. We cannot allow industries to atrophy and innovation to languish until there is a war. Meaningful partnerships between industry and Capitol Hill must be restored.

Finally, as the saying goes, “Freedom is not free”. Every day our men and women in uniform put their lives on the line to protect our nation. Their commitment is unwavering. Unfortunately, Congress has shown anything but consistency when it comes to our national defense. Congress must do its part by providing timely, adequate, and predictable funding for our national defense and supporting our men and women in combat regardless of the political circumstances surrounding their mission.

And when veterans return from battle to rejoin their families and communities, we must provide them the tools and resources necessary to pursue the American Dream through educational advancement, job training, and community support. Our commitment to veterans can be seen in the programs that make college more accessible and affordable; in the investments in medical care and treatment; and in the initiatives that help servicemen and women to thrive in the civilian workforce.
